Ultrasound, which uses sound waves, is a super imaging tool that is noninvasive, quick, inexpensive, and helps determine further testing required while minimizing unnecessary testing. Unlike X-rays there are no safety issues with radiation. Ultrasound can be done with the initial exam to direct further testing and treatment.

Ultrasound can also be used for emergency triage, senior screening, heart screening, heart murmur screening, kidney screening, tumor/cancer screening, eye screening, preanesthetic evaluation, urinary conditions, and illness diagnosis.

Often sedation will help provide better images by reducing movement.
